Tamil Hindu devotees perform the Angapradakshinam ritual (as an act of penance) during the Thaipusam Festival at the Thiru Murugan Temple in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Angapradakshinam ritual requires devotees to hold puja coconuts while rolling on the ground behind the large wooden chariot carrying the idol of Lord Murugan throughout the entire procession, which often lasts around 5-6 hours. Around 3500 devotees took part in the festival, which commemorates the occasion when the Goddess Parvati gave Lord Murugan his Vel (spear) so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.
