A memorial with flowers is placed outside the home of Professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro, who is fatally shot overnight at his home on Gibbs Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States, on December 16, 2025. Loureiro is taken Monday evening to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he is pronounced dead. MIT confirms in a statement that Loureiro is a member of their faculty in the Nuclear Science & Engineering and Physics department and the director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center. There are no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
