The ninth anniversary of the L'Aquila earthquake will be marked on 06 April 2018, commemorating the deaths of nearly 300 people when the quake devastated the city of L'Aquila, Italy. On Monday, April 6th of 2009, a powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shook the central Italian city of LAquila and its surrounding villages.

A court has upheld the appeals of six scientists and an official against their convictions for having given criminally negligent reassurances to the population of the city of L’Aquila before it was devastated by an earthquake five years ago. A group of Italian scientists convicted of manslaughter for failing to predict a deadly earthquake have had the verdict quashed. The seven men had been given six-year jail sentences after an earthquake devastated the medieval town of L'Aquila in 2009, killing 309 people.
