Mount Merapi releases volcanic material into the air as seen from Turgo village, Sleman district in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on December 23, 2021. Mount Merapi volcano erupted on Thursday for the fourth time in a week, and the volcanic status of Mount Merapi has been at alert Level 3 (Siaga) since November 5, 2020. Mt. Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. An eruption in 2010 left more than 300 people dead and forced almost 400,000 people to take refuge. The volcano has since continued rumbling, spewing hot ash and volcanic material in a series of eruptions over the past decade.

As of Wednesday, Jan 26, some 1,988 Omicron-infected patients were recorded. The daily count of COVID-19 cases had reached 9,905 as of Friday, January 28. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin estimated that the number of cases would continue to increase and even peak from February to early March 2022, with the Omicron variant being the predominant cause.
