In February 1979, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the king of Iran, left the country, and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned from France, which marked the beginning of the ''Ten Days of Dawn'' leading to the victory of the Islamic Revolution. The removal of Pahlavi, the last king of Iran, officially marked the end of the country's historic monarchy.
