A stone cross carved from local basalt and integrated into the dark dry-stone retaining wall marks the entrance of the Deutsche Kriegsgraberstatte at Passo della Futa, near Firenzuola, in the Apennine mountains of Italy, on April 6, 2026. The cross is a defining element of the memorial's austere architectural language, designed by architect Dieter Oesterlen and inaugurated in 1969. The cemetery holds the remains of approximately 30,683 German soldiers killed during World War II in the Italian campaign and is maintained by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgraberfursorge.
