An empty branch of sandwich chain Pret A Manger, which has switched to takeaway-only service, seen near Trafalgar Square in London, England, on March 19, 2020. Amid the ongoing covid-19 coronavirus crisis the British government today sought to quash mounting speculation of an imminent lockdown of the city involving restrictions on movement. New measures for pubs, cafes, bars and theatres are however expected to be announced shortly. Earlier, it was announced that 40 London Underground stations are to be closed as Transport for London begins scaling back its services, and many public spaces and streets in the capital today were visibly empty, with many shops and restaurants closed. To date, 953 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in London, with more than 2,600 cases and 137 deaths across the UK as a whole.
