A male Black Stream Glider (Trithemis festiva), also known as the Indigo Dropwing, perches on rocks in Padamchen, Sikkim, India, on April 19, 2026. This species is an ecological indicator of healthy, unpolluted, and running water habitats across Asia and parts of Europe. Males are identifiable by their pale blue body and dark head and eyes. They inhabit shallow, rocky, and fast-flowing rivers. Both larvae and adults are predators, feeding on mosquito larvae and other aquatic insects, thus helping control mosquito populations in aquatic ecosystems. The male is seen in a characteristic ''dropwing'' posture, with wings held forward and downward, surveying its surroundings and defending territories along watercourses.

A man sits next to moored Shikara boats along the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 11, 2026. The Comptroller and Auditor General of India reports that nearly 74 percent of Kashmir's lakes have either vanished or are shrinking, with 518 out of 697 water bodies affected. This includes 315 that have disappeared and 203 that have reduced in size, resulting in a loss of 2,851 hectares since 1967 due to factors such as climate change and encroachments.
