Ramesh Lekhak (in white), former Nepali Home Minister, is taken to the Kathmandu District Court from the District Government Attorney Office in Kathmandu on March 29, 2026. The Kathmandu District Court grants permission to keep former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak in custody for five days for investigation. Both are presented before the court on the second day of their arrest on March 29, 2026. The government accuses them in connection with deaths that occurred during the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9, 2025. Authorities have filed charges related to homicide, leading to their detention for investigation. Lekhak is physically presented before the court, while Oli attends the hearing virtually from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj. Oli is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, where doctors say he is dealing with several health conditions. He was admitted after experiencing irregular heart palpitations and has a medical history that includes two kidney transplants. According to the hospital, he is also suffering from multiple conditions including hydronephrosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid-related issues, and atrial fibrillation. Doctors have also detected gallstones. Hospital authorities say Oli is currently receiving treatment under medical supervision at the hospital's Annex-1, bed number 501.

A child observes a burning tire set alight by supporters of former Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during a protest in Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 28, 2026. The demonstration follows the arrest of Oli on charges related to events during the Gen-Z protest in September of the previous year. Protesters also burn a report by the High Level Investigation Commission, which was formed to investigate the incidents during the Gen-Z protest. The protest aligns with a decision made at a central secretariat meeting at the party headquarters in Lalitpur, which directed mass organizations to lead protests on behalf of the party. The meeting also resolved to pursue legal and political actions against Oli's arrest. The report attributes the response to the protests to criminal negligence and recklessness, citing a failure to act on prior intelligence about potential escalation, which resulted in 77 deaths and significant property damage.
