Sri Lankan Buddhists and Tamil Hindus celebrate their traditional new year annually, which is based on the astrological belief that the new year begins when the sun moves from the house of Pisces to that of Aries. This day also signifies the end of the harvest season and the arrival of spring in Sri Lanka.
