1 February 2024
Animal activists are gathering outside the Indonesian Parliament building in Jakarta, Indonesia, on February 1, 2024, to protest and demand an end to the dog and cat meat trade. This protest comes just weeks after South Korea's parliament unanimously passed a bill to outlaw the dog meat industry. The ban, which received 208 votes in favor, none against, and two abstentions on Tuesday, January 9, will take effect after a three-year grace period. Starting in 2027, those who breed, butcher, distribute, or sell dog meat for human consumption may face up to three years in jail or fines up to 30 million won ($22,800). Recently, Indonesian police intercepted a truck carrying 226 dogs bound for a slaughterhouse in Semarang, Central Java, bringing the country's dog meat trade back into the spotlight. Since 2019, the campaign to end the dog and cat meat trade in Southeast Asia has garnered overwhelming global support, highlighting the urgent need for change. Every year, over nine million dogs and one million cats are brutally slaughtered for the trade in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia, and now two million people worldwide are demanding an end to this unimaginable cruelty.
