Carmat, 83, is staring out to sea near the remains of his house, which was destroyed by high waves in Cemarajaya Village, Karawang Regency, West Java Province, on January 26, 2024. Village residents say that the rate of coastal erosion due to waves and rising sea levels in Cemarajaya Village is increasing, averaging about 5 meters each year. Since 1998, the village has been experiencing tidal waves and rising sea levels along with tidal floods, especially after plantation land was converted into fish and shrimp ponds. The residents' plantations have vanished, and their houses have been submerged. The village, which used to be approximately 1 kilometer from the coastline, is now on the front line, facing the waves and continuing to suffer from erosion that threatens its very existence.
