Pope Francis is presiding over a mass in St. Peter's Square, The Vatican, on October 4, 2023. The newly appointed cardinals are co-celebrating this mass, marking the start of the XVI General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. Additionally, he is hosting a worldwide gathering of bishops and laypeople to deliberate on the Catholic Church's future. They are tackling some contentious issues previously deemed inappropriate for discussion. The primary agenda items encompass the role of women in the church, the acceptance of LGBTQ+ Catholics, and the manner in which bishops wield authority. For the first time, women and laypeople are being granted the chance to vote on specific proposals alongside bishops
