Greek border police officers and army can patrol along the steel fence next to Evros river between Greece and Turkey to prevent unauthorized illegal entry of migrants. The fence is concrete filled, a construction which is expanding with recent announcements adding 80km more, covering the wetlands of Evros river (Meric in Turkish) and Greece's river border with Turkey. Asylum seekers, migrants and refugees used Evros as an entrance point to Europe, while in March 2020 a huge wave of thousands of people tried to cross the borders.
