Lightning strikes Saptha Kanya mountain in Maskeliya, Sri Lanka, on April 7, 2025. Martinair Flight 138 is a charter flight of Martinair from Surabaya to Jeddah with a stopover in Colombo. On December 4, 1974, the Douglas DC-8 operating the flight crashes into a mountain shortly before landing, killing all 191 people aboard, including 182 passengers, all of whom are Indonesian Hajj pilgrims, and nine crew members. The crash remains the deadliest in Sri Lankan aviation history.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to protest Donald Trump's takeover of the organization, in Washington on March 8, 2025. Hundreds of people attend the event, hosted by a drag artist collective, after Trump cited the Kennedy Center's hosting of drag events as one reason for his hostile takeover. The musical Hamilton recently cancelled its performances at the Center due to Trump's takeover.
