Among the inscriptions are Gefreiter Werner Pulverscheid (born November 28, 1924, died March 29, 1945) and Georg Schal, Rottenfuhrer (born November 18, 1920, died December 24, 1944), both killed in the final months of World War II. The site holds approximately 30,683 German soldiers, many of them teenagers, killed during the Italian campaign.
