Algeria commemorates the events that began on May 8, 1945, when police opened fire on nationalist party demonstrators demanding an end to French colonization in exchange for their involvement in World War II. According to the Algerian government, the violence persisted until June 1945, resulting in approximately 45,000 deaths.
