Employees of the City of Barcelona (Spain) placed a banner reading Refugees Welcome on the main facade of the town hall on 16 March, 2016. After the decision taken by the European Commission not to accept more refugees the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, agreed with Lesbos and Lampedusa to cooperate in logistics, social and environmental matters while president of the Catalan Government, Carles Puigdemont, sent a letter to European Commissioner for EU Immigration Dimitris Avramopoulus to inform that Catalonia is working to accommodate up to 4,500 refugees.
