Three 'faucheurs volontaires' ie 'Volunteer Reapers' went on trial in Toulouse on March 30 th 2022 for the destruction of .75ha of cultivated fields with sunflowers. Today, the judgement was given it's one of the harshest ever given to the 'Faucheurs volontaires' : 3 months suspended prison sentence, €400.588 for damags to Arvalis and €3000 of justice costs. The three 'Faucheurs volontaires' will make an appeal against the court's decision. The sunflowers were part of a test for a Vegetable Variety Tolerant At Herbicides (VrTH) in 2017. The test project was called SYPPRE and made by Arvalis (cropmaker), the Beetroot Technical Institute and by Terres-Inovia. VrTH are considered by French Justice as GMOs, and GMOs are forbidden to farm in France (and the EU). Thus, the 'faucheurs volontaires" say they are entitled to destroy these crops as they can't be farm in Europe. They consider themselves as civil disobedients. Toulouse. France. May 11th 2022.
