It Is One Of The Biggest Freshwater Prawns In The World And A Good Source Of Healthy Food For Human Consumption. The Giant Freshwater Prawn Has Also Been Introduced To Parts Of Africa, China, Japan, New Zealand, The Americas, And The Caribbean. Females M. Rosenbergii Lay 10,000-50,000 Eggs Up To Five Times Per Year. Over The Last 30 years, The Culture Of M. Rosenbergii Has Increased Exponentially As Demand Has Risen Both For Domestic Consumption And International Export Trade. As With Many Aquaculture Species Increases In Production Have Been Accompanied By The Emergence Of Diseases Affecting Yield, Profit And Trading Potential. Disease-causing Agents Include Pathogens Infecting Other Crustaceans, Such As Decapod Iridescent Virus (DIV1), White Tail Disease Caused By Macrobrachium Rosenbergii Nodavirus (MrNV) And Extra Small Virus (XSV).
