After the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genoa, alarms on infrastructure in Italy are multiplying. In addition to having built the collapsed Genoa bridge, the Roman engineer Riccardo Morandi (who died in 1989 at the age of 87) has also designed a bridge in the capital. It is a curvilinear suspended viaduct that runs along the Tiber at the Magliana district, covered every day by all those who come or travel to Fiumicino. Although considerably smaller in size, the Morandi bridge in Rome is reminiscent of the Genoa one as regards both the materials and the structural solutions adopted, Rome, Italy, 17 august 2018

A picture taken on August 14, 2018 shows vehicles standing on a part of a Morandi motorway bridge after a section collapsed earlier in Genoa. - At least 30 people were killed on August 14 when the giant motorway bridge collapsed, with several more feared dead in what Italy's transport minister described as an 'immense tragedy'. The collapse, which saw a vast stretch of the A10 freeway tumble on to railway lines in the northern port city, was the deadliest bridge failure in Italy for years, and the country's deputy transport minister warned the death toll could climb further.
