Cyclists are displaying a placard that reads 'For Fabre, an airport, a highway, devastated lands, what else?' as thousands of people are demonstrating in the streets of Toulouse, France, against the controversial A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres. Political parties, unions, and NGOs, including La Voie est Libre, GNSA, CGT, Sud, Greenpeace, XR, LFI, NPA, Amis de la Terre, and FSU, have called for this day of protest. Several MPs from La France Insoumise and elected officials from towns along the planned A69 highway route are participating in the protest. Before the march began, dozens of cyclists arrived from Castres on their bicycles. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' and other opponents are demanding that construction of the highway be halted until all judicial decisions have been made. The issue of expropriations for farmers has not been resolved. Opponents argue that reprofiling the N126 would be sufficient for the anticipated 6,000 vehicles per day and would cost significantly less. The A69 highway is projected to cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros, excluding inflation) for 54 kilometers, and its construction would destroy habitats for over 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land. The protest is taking place in Toulouse, France, on April 21, 2024.

Protesters are marching in the streets of Toulouse, France, on April 21, 2024, displaying a banner that reads 'Pierre Fabre shareholder, Jean Terlier, you are leaving it.' Thousands are demonstrating against the controversial A69 highway project between Toulouse and Castres. Political parties, unions, and NGOs, including La Voie est Libre, GNSA, CGT, Sud, Greenpeace, XR, LFI, NPA, Amis de la Terre, and FSU, have called for this day of protest. Several MPs from La France Insoumise and elected officials from towns along the planned A69 route are participating in the protest. Before the march began, dozens of cyclists arrived from Castres on their bicycles. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' is leading the opposition, demanding a halt to the highway construction until all judicial decisions are made. The expropriations for farmers have not been resolved. Opponents argue that upgrading the N126 would be sufficient for the anticipated 6,000 vehicles per day and would be much less expensive. The A69 highway is projected to cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros, excluding inflation) for 54 kilometers, threatening over 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land.

Riot Police In The ZAD 'Crem'Arbre' Against The A69 Highway Toulouse-Castres

Gendarmes Mobiles are blocking the entrance to the ZAD and the woods occupied by individuals known as 'Ecureuils' near a sign that reads 'Pierre Fabre road'. Pierre Fabre, an entrepreneur, is one of the main backers of the construction of the A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres. In the woods in Saix, Tarn Department, France, on February 17, 2024, opponents of this project have set up a ZAD named 'Crem'Arbre', and 'Ecureuils' are living in the trees to prevent them from being cut down. The Gendarmes Mobiles have intervened to clear the ZAD of all opponents and are now standing guard near the trees occupied by 'Ecureuils' to block the delivery of supplies such as food and water by sympathizers. MP Karen Erodi attempted to enter the ZAD, which is being blocked by the Gendarmes Mobiles, without success, despite it being illegal to block an MP in France. The riot police, Gendarmerie Mobile, have intervened multiple times to block the railway between Toulouse and Castres and have used tear gas canisters to intimidate protesters, as the protest is taking place on private lands. The main collective 'La Voie est Libre' is demanding that the construction of the highway be halted until all judicial decisions regarding the dispute are made. The expropriations for farmers have not been resolved. Opponents argue that the reprofiling of the N126 would be sufficient for the planned 6,000 vehicles per day and would cost significantly less. Balck blocs try to destroy the fences arounf a building of Pierre Fabre Industries. More than 8000 protesters marched 12km against the planned A69 highway. The collectives 'La Voie Est Libre' (ie 'The Way Is Free'), the farmers organization Confederation Paysanne, XR Toulouse (Extinction Rebellion Toulouse) and 'Les soulevements de la Terre' organized a week-end of mobilization and a 12 km march in Saix near Castres (Tarn) against the beginning of the works on the decried future highway Toulouse-Castres, the A69. Thousands of people stayed in the camp with tents. They assisted to speeches, press conferences, information points before going protesting along places to be destroyed by the highway and on the N126 . This highway would cost (at date) EUR512millions for 54 kilometers, part of the money will be public. Opponents at this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 will be suffisant for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. More than 100 protected species and 400ha of agricultural field would be destroyed if the A69 highway is built. The A69 highway is already nicknamed 'Fabre highway' as it's this compagny which wants the A69 to be built. Saix. Tarn. France. April 22th 2023.
