Drone images of new UNESCO world heritage site Philippi in Greece on 20 July 2016. The present municipality, Filippoi, is located near the ruins of the ancient city and is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace in Kavalla Greece. In the UNESCO World Heritage Congress in 2016 in Istanbul ( 40th Session of the World Heritage Committee ) , Philipi added in the list. Founded in 356BC by the Macedonian King Philip II, this walled city lies on an ancient trade route that links Europe and Asia. Over the years the site has been adopted and developed by various religions and civilisations, including the Roman Empire (in 42BC) and Christian apostles (46AD). The ancient town of Philippi, founded in 362 BC, once formed part of the Roman Empire. That's where the famous battle between Cesar's assassins, Brutus and Cassius and Antony and Octavian, took place. Part of the oral tradition is the dictum 'At Philippi, we'll meet again' which was picked up by Shakespeare in 'Julius Cesar.'
