Protests began when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in custody of Iran’s morality police September 16, 2022, after being arrested for “improperly” wearing her hijab. Iranian authorities claim she died of a heart attack, an account disputed by her family. The protests represent the most serious threat to the Islamic regime in decades.
