An NGE/Atosca worker places a placard reading 'construction site forbidden to public' under gendarmes' protection. For the fifth day, the Gendarmerie and CNAMO try to dislodge 'Ecureuils' (i.e., 'Squirrels') from the trees they occupy at the 'Verger' ZAD (Zone to Defend). The 'Verger' ZAD is situated on the planned and disputed A69 highway project. NGE/Atosca begins the destruction of the house and the cutting of all the trees. The CNAMO is a specialized unit of gendarmes to unlock protesters. 'Ecureuils' (i.e., 'squirrels') live in the trees of the 'Verger' ZAD. The Gendarmerie breaks a deal between protesters and bats ('chauve-souris' people living on the rooftop of the Verger's house): four bags of food and water for 'ecureuils' in exchange for four 'bats' who leave the roof with only an ID check. The Gendarmerie does not keep its word and brings them to a police station. Gendarmes of the CNAMO catch only one squirrel. Atosca cuts the tree immediately. They try without success to catch the other 'Ecureuils' and mutilate Zineb, an old walnut tree, to catch two 'ecureuils'. The main collective 'La Voie est Libre' (i.e., 'The Way is Free') wants the highway to be stopped until all the justice decisions on the content are given. All expropriations for farmers are not cleared. Opponents of this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 will be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. The A69 highway will cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros without inflation) for 53 kilometers. More than 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural fields will be destroyed. In Verfeil, France, on September 23, 2024.

One of the tree destroyed under heavy police security by SMDA. The ribbon reads 'National gendarmerie, forbidden area'. Thomas Brail, the arborist-climber activist is on hunger strike for the 6th day in Saint-Germain-des-Pres (near Castres) as the planned and contested highway A69 between Toulouse and Castres is underway. He tried with other opponents to block the destruction of platanes by the SMDA 'Soins Modernes des Arbres' (ie 'Modern cures for trees') firm. The cutting went ahead heavily protected by police. Thomas Brail wants public authorities to react to the ecological consequences of this highway. Thomas Brail and other people stand in the trees to be cut for the highway. He's ready to continue his hunger strike until the works stop. The collective 'La Voie est Libre' (ie 'The Way is Free'), opponents and Thomas Brail want the building of the highway to be stopped until all the justice decisions on the content to be given. Supporters and four others climbers stand with him. Dozen of climbers say they will come to support him and his fight for the tress He also says that he's compelled to go on hunger strike for the future of his son. Oppponents This highway would cost (at date) EUR512millions for 54 kilometers, half of the money will be public. Opponents at this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 will be suffisant for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. More than 100 protected species and 400ha of agricultural field would be destroyed if the A69 highway is built. Saint-Germain-Des-Pres. Tarn. France. September 6th 2023.
