Women dressed in black sing the Hymn of the Desolate as the Madonna Desolata is carried out of the Church of San Francesco e Biagio on Holy Saturday in Canosa di Puglia, Italy, on April 4, 2026. On the morning of Holy Saturday, a large choir composed exclusively of women with veiled faces and dressed in black--some of whom go barefoot--sings a traditional hymn, the Stabat Mater, based on the lyrics of Jacopone da Todi. They move slowly with their faces hidden, participating in a ritual that commemorates Christ's death and involves the entire community.
