Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), addresses a news conference before releasing the manifesto of the party for the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on August 24, 2024. The elections to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly take place after a gap of 10 years in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1. Jammu and Kashmir has been without an elected government since June 19, 2018, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pulls out of its alliance with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti. A year later, the BJP-led government in New Delhi ends the semi-autonomous character of Jammu and Kashmir by abrogating Article 370 of the Indian constitution and by dividing the state into two federally-controlled Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
