The destructive effects of World War II on Poland's population, economy, and culture are still felt today; over 5.2 million lives were lost, and the nation has been left to rebuild from ruins. KRAKOW, POLAND - AUGUST 31: Deatails of the monument to the Soviet Army soldiers who fell in the 'battle for the liberation' of Krakow in 1945, seen at Rakowicki Cemetery on the eve of the 85th anniversary of World War II's outbreak, on August 31, 2024, in Krakow, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland. On September 1, 1939, Germany, joined by Slovakia, attacked Poland from the west and north, and on September 17, the Soviet Union attacked from the east.
