23 August 2025
On August 23, 2025, in Daegu, South Korea, people play water sports near the Nakdong River. The seasonal term Cheoseo, which traditionally marks the retreat of summer heat, approaches on Saturday, but signs of relief from the sweltering weather are nowhere to be seen. The so-called ''Cheoseo magic,'' where heat usually fades after this point, appears absent this year, with temperatures forecast to soar past 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit) through the weekend. Cheoseo is part of the 24 solar terms, first developed in ancient China, which divide the year into segments that reflect seasonal changes in climate, agriculture, and natural phenomena.

Green algae cover the lake at Daecheong Lake in Daejeon, South Korea, on August 23, 2025. Green algae blooms occur when nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus from land are washed into water bodies by rain, and water temperatures rise, creating ideal conditions for harmful cyanobacteria to thrive. Cyanobacteria, a type of phytoplankton, are essential components of aquatic ecosystems. However, when they proliferate excessively, they can produce foul odors, degrade water quality, and even cause fish deaths. This year, green algae in Daecheong Lake begin spreading in the latter part of last month.
