Laborers cover their face to escape pollution of the brick kiln. Kamduni, West Bengal, India 08.03.17 The brick kilns of Bengal employ a large number of laborers from distant villages of Bihar, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh. Thousands of daily wage earners migrate to Bengal to work for 6-7 months every year. As the entire families including women and children work as a unit, it is needless to say that child labor is an accepted practice in the kilns. With poor health and hygiene facilities, prolonged working hours, and interference by the brokers, the laborers of the brick kilns like Kamduni, are in a sorry plight. The children of these families are the worst affected as pollution of the kilns lead to inevitable health hazards. Even while the Government and NGOs cry out against child labor, the children living here are forced to lend a hand to their parents because payment comes according to the total bricks produced by each family. Education and a carefree childhood remains only a far-away dream.
