Labourers transplant rice seedlings in a waterlogged paddy field on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on June 07, 2026. Agriculture and horticulture are central to Kashmir's economy, supporting many families who depend on seasonal farming activities. This year's paddy cultivation season occurs amid concerns over the economic impact of the conflict in Iran, which has increased the cost of fertilizers, fuel, and transportation--key inputs for rice production. Rising diesel prices have raised expenses for irrigation, mechanized farming, and the transport of agricultural produce, while disruptions in fertilizer supplies have added to farmers' financial challenges. The conflict has also affected India's rice trade, particularly basmati exports to Iran, a significant market for Indian rice, due to higher freight costs and shipping uncertainties, placing additional pressure on both farmers and exporters.

Labourers load garbage and plastic waste into a dump truck on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on June 5, 2026, during World Environment Day. World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 to raise awareness and encourage action for environmental protection, with the 2026 theme being ''Climate Action'' (NowForClimate). According to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, approximately 74% of Kashmir's lakes and water bodies have either disappeared or become smaller. Of 697 water bodies studied, 315 have vanished and 203 have reduced in size, resulting in a loss of about 2,851 hectares since 1967. Climate change and encroachment are among the main causes. Glaciers in the Kashmir Himalayas have been shrinking due to rising temperatures, less snowfall, and changing weather patterns. Studies indicate that some glaciers, such as the Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg, have lost most of their ice, with the region potentially losing roughly a quarter to a third of its glacier cover over the past 60 years.
