A little girl, Minudi Menulya, enjoys a lupin field in bloom in Lake Tekapo in the Mackenzie Country, South Island, New Zealand, on January 4, 2026. Tekapo is one of New Zealand's most popular tourist attractions. Each November, huge, colorful fields of lupin flowers begin to emerge along the lake shores, streams, canals, and highways of the Mackenzie Region of New Zealand. However, lupins are a non-native species of flowers, and they cause a number of problems in New Zealand because they spread rapidly, pushing native flora and fauna out of their habitats.

Flowers and photos of Black men killed by police line the stage during a rally in remembrance of George Floyd on what would have been his 52nd birthday, in Washington, U.S., on October 14, 2025. Minneapolis, Minn. police officer Derek Chauvin killed Floyd by kneeling on his neck for more than 9 minutes. Vera Vigevani de Jarach arrives 86 years ago from Milan, Italy, by boat, fleeing the racial laws of fascist Italy. Her grandfather dies in Auschwitz. There is no grave to mourn him. Another genocide strikes three decades later. Vera's only daughter, Franca Jarach, is disappeared by the dictatorship. Nor is there a grave to leave her a flower. ''I have two stories that prove that what happened once can happen again,'' she warns. A Mother of the Plaza de Mayo of the Founding Line and a member of the Argentine Historical and Social Memory Foundation, Vera dies at the age of 97. Vera is born on March 5, 1928, in northern Italy. She and her family decide to come to Argentina to escape fascism. They travel on the Augustus ship, traveling second class because they don't have money for more. On the journey, the children--despite the horrors stalking them--play. What amuses them most is hide-and-seek. ''I am still a little girl, but when I arrive my childhood is over,'' she says.

A little girl places a flower on a dead fur seal in Kaikoura Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand, on January 10, 2025. Kaikoura is a famous travel destination for whales, fur seals, albatross, bird watching, and snorkeling with dolphins in New Zealand. There are over a million fur seals in Aotearoa before the fur and oil trade nearly wipes them out. Since 1978, they are protected by the Marine Mammals Act, and now about 25,000 live around Kaikoura.
