Marcela Mella Ortiz, spokeswoman of the action group Coordinadora Ríos del Maipo. Around 200 activists protest in Santiago de Chile against the Alto Maipo hydroelectric power project. AES Gener, a Chilean subsidiary of US-based AES Corporation, pretends to install two run-of-the-river hydroelectric plants with a total of 531MW in the Maipo river basin, 50 km southeast of Santiago. To finance the project AES Gener is seeking funds from several banks to fund 60-70 per cent of the project costs including the International Finance Corporation (IFC). According to the activists, the Alto Maipo project endangers Santiago's water supply. Photo: David Von Blohn/NurPhoto
