In 1995, during the Bosnian War, the city is the site of the genocidal killing of 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, perpetrated by units of the Bosnian Serb army of Republika Srpska. On July 11, 2025, the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica takes place.
