Participants in the 'All Eyes On Rojava' demonstration show solidarity with the residents of Rojava on the Main Market Square in Krakow, Poland, on February 1, 2026. The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, commonly known as Rojava, is a semi-autonomous region in Syria, more than half of which is inhabited by Kurds. It is renowned for defeating ISIS forces and for its commitment to freedom of religion and women's equality. At the end of 2024, Bashar al-Assad's rule falls, and former al-Qaeda member Ahmad al-Shara takes power with the radical Islamic group Hayat Tahrir al-Shara (HTS). President al-Shara recognizes the Kurdish language by decree and declares the Kurdish holiday of Nawruz a national holiday. However, at the same time, the Syrian army begins mass displacement of Kurds and shelling of Kurdish neighborhoods, including in Aleppo, where over 100,000 Kurds flee the city.
