Members of the New Jersey State Police check names of family members waiting in line to verify if they are on the list for limited visitation with those detained at Delaney Hall Immigration Detention Center in Newark, New Jersey, on May 31, 2026. Peaceful protests regarding the treatment of detainees, who are reportedly on a hunger strike at the facility, turned violent overnight from Saturday into Sunday morning when fires were set and property was damaged. State Police have announced that the closure will remain in effect indefinitely, with a curfew in place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily until further notice. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has announced that limited visitation will resume at noon on Sunday, with regular visitation hours restored beginning Monday for families visiting those detained at Delaney Hall.
