French CGT trade union General Secretary Philippe Martinez, French union Union syndicale Solidaires (SUD) co-general delegates Murielle Guilbert, French Force Ouvriere (FO) union general secretary Frederic Souillot (8L), French Democratic Confederation of Labour (CFDT) union's general secretary Laurent Berger, France National Union of Autonomous Trade Unions (Union nationale des Syndicats Autonomes - Unsa) Laurent Escure (9L), and French Confederation of Christian Workers (CFTC) union president Cyril Chabanier arrive in front of the National Assembly to hold a press conference before the French government pushed a pensions reform through parliament without a vote, using the article 49,3 of the constitution, in Paris on March 16, 2023. The French president on March 16 rammed a controversial pension reform through parliament without a vote, deploying a rarely used constitutional power that risks inflaming protests. The move was an admission that his government lacked a majority in the National Assembly to pass the legislation to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.
