The Soviet Union joins military operations on the side of Nazi Germany and, without declaring war, invades Poland on September 17, 1939, thus fulfilling the protocol of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The Soviet murders of Polish officers and intelligentsia begin at that time.
