Despite the dawn of Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Sri Lankans have withdrawn from celebrations as Sri Lanka Police stated that celebrations for New Year have been prohibited during curfew hours as curfew is imposed to restrict peoples movements in an effort to contain spread of COVID-19. According to Sri Lankan Health Ministry 7 deaths and 219 positive cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Sri Lanka while an island-wide curfew is imposed till April 16 to minimize the spread of Covid-19.
