The 400 year old ritual takes place annually on Lunar New Year season to drive away evil spirits from a rice field, to wish for prosperity, avoidance of diseases and also for family safety. Hiburi Kamakura is a traditional New Years event in which participants light a tenpitsu, a bundle of rice ears and swing around their body and creates the fire rings that illuminates the snow-covered park where the event is held.
