This ancient temple is a significant symbol for the Tamil people and is dedicated to Parvati who is known as Nagapooshani or Bhuvaneswari and her consort, Shiva who is named here as Nayinaar. The tallest of the temple gateway towers is the Raja Raja Gopuram tower measuring at 108 feet high and is the largest of its kind in Sri Lanka.
