India's foreign minister says that trade negotiations with Washington continue, but there are lines that New Delhi needs to defend, just days before hefty additional U.S. tariffs are due to hit. In an escalation of trade tensions between the United States and India, US President Donald Trump, on August 6, 2025, signs an executive order imposing a 25 percent ad valorem tariff on all Indian imports into the United States. The ad valorem duty imposed in Executive Order 14257 applies in addition to the ad valorem duty imposed in section 2 of the order. A vendor sells fabric as he waits for customers at his shop in a market in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on May 28, 2025. Following a deadly terror attack near south Kashmir's Pahalgam that kills 26 tourists, the Indian Armed Forces launch ''Operation Sindoor'' on May 7, 2025, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Although a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan brokered by the United States comes into effect on May 10, fear and uncertainty already devastate Kashmir's tourism sector. The approximately Rupees 8,000 crore tourism industry, which contributes 7% to the region's GDP and employs around 70,000 people, is now in crisis. Tourist spots empty, and hotels, tour operators, and local vendors face mass cancellations. With thousands of livelihoods at risk, the region reels from the renewed instability.
