Protesters are facing off with police officers as they demand the release of five individuals who have been arrested. Extinction Rebellion - Toulouse is currently organizing an action called 'Hello Darkness' in front of the town hall of Toulouse, the Capitole, to protest against the controversial A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres. They are also protesting against the construction of several bitumen plants along the A69 near schools and organic vegetable producers. Some activists are covering themselves with fake bitumen to symbolize the pollution caused by asphalt production. Police have intervened and arrested five people. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' (meaning 'The Way is Free'), along with other opponents, is demanding that the construction of the highway be halted until all judicial decisions regarding the matter are made. The issue of expropriations for farmers has not been resolved. Opponents of the project argue that the reprofiling of the N126 would be sufficient for the anticipated 6,000 vehicles per day and would cost significantly less money. The A69 highway is projected to cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros, not adjusted for inflation) for 54 kilometers, and its construction would result in the destruction of over 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land. In Toulouse, France, on May 4, 2024.

Police officers are walking with an activist they have arrested to place him in a police van. Extinction Rebellion - Toulouse is organizing an action called 'Hello Darkness' in front of the town hall of Toulouse, the Capitole, to protest against the controversial A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres. They are also protesting against the construction of several bitumen plants along the A69 near schools and organic vegetable producers. Some activists are receiving fake bitumen on themselves to symbolize the pollution caused by asphalt production. The police have intervened and arrested five people. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' (i.e., 'The Way is Free'), which opposes the highway, wants the construction to be halted until all judicial decisions on the matter are made. Not all expropriations for farmers have been resolved. Opponents of the project argue that the reprofiling of the N126 would be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles expected per day and would cost much less. The A69 highway is projected to cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros without inflation) for 54 kilometers, and its construction will destroy habitats for more than 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land. Police officers stretch across Great Peter Street, near the Home Office where members of climate change activist movement Extinction Rebellion (XR) remain gathered on the third day of the group's 'International Rebellion' in London, England, on October 9, 2019. Police officers today continued to clear demonstrators and tents from sites across Westminster, with activists having been warned yesterday that they must move to a designated protest area around Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square or face arrest. Similar blockades by Extinction Rebellion in April, at sites including Oxford Circus and Waterloo Bridge, saw more than 1,000 arrested a tactic promoted by XR founder Roger Hallam as a means of maximising disruption and publicity. Besides London, demonstrations are being staged by XR chapters in dozens of cities around the world.
