President Joe Biden points to Ret. US Army Colonel Paris Davis to emphasize that the audience's standing ovation is for Davis' heroism in the Vietnam War, for which he had just been awarded the Medal of Honor. Davis repeatedly risked his life to rescue wounded soldiers in the course of a 19-hour battle in June, 1965, in which he himself was wounded numerous times. Twice nominated for the award in the years immediately following, the paperwork was lost both times, resulting in a 57-year delay between his actions and the award.
