Pro-Palestine demonstrators are gathering in protest both inside and outside the locked gates of the Columbia University campus in New York City, USA, on April 23, 2024. Students who are standing on Columbia's main quad are facing the public street through the locked gate and are using megaphones to lead the crowd assembled outside in chants. Campus security has been tight since the ''Gaza Solidarity Encampment'' protest standoff began a week ago. Since only those with university ID--and members of the media during certain hours of the day--are allowed on campus, additional groups of protesters from outside the Columbia community are often forming on the public streets next to the main quad. Tensions remain high days after Columbia University President Nemat ''Minouche'' Shafik called the NYPD onto the college campus on April 18, 2024, to arrest scores of pro-Palestine students who refused to dismantle protest encampments on the main campus quad. The standoff and arrests occurred after President Shafik had faced questions before Congress regarding campus antisemitism and enforcement of rules against protests. The demonstrators are demanding divestment from Israel amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza War.
