15 March 2025
Pro-Israel counter-protesters gather across the street from hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters outside of Columbia University in New York, USA, on March 14, 2025. The pro-Palestinian demonstrators demand the release of Mahmoud Khalil from ICE detention in Louisiana. Khalil is a recent Columbia graduate and green card holder who is arrested by ICE at his home on March 8, 2025. The Trump Administration accuses him--without evidence--of material support for Hamas and ''anti-American'' activities, due to his pro-Palestinian advocacy on campus. Khalil is of Palestinian descent and is a lead organizer of pro-Palestinian protests on campus. A judge temporarily blocks his removal from the U.S. Demonstrators also denounce Columbia University's announcement of expulsions, suspensions, and temporary degree revocations for the pro-Palestine protests on campus in spring 2024.
