Remains of the Cold War era Soviet secret military base is seen in Irbene near Ventspils, Latvia on 9 June 2023 The military base included 3 radio telescopes: 32m, 16m and 8m as well as all the necessary infrastructure for up keeping over 2000 scientists, generals and soldiers with their familiesn like kindergarten, school, shops, technical support houses, 4 block houses with 260 flats, post office etc in an area over 400ha. The secret code name for this place was Zvezdochka (a Little Star). Ex-Soviet radio astronomy installation was secret until 1993 after Latvia regained independence. It was possibly used by the KGB during the Cold War to spy on communications between Europe and the United States.
