Thick smog covers Delhi, India, on July 24, 2024. India's capital, with 18 million residents, has the world's most polluted air with six times the amount of small particulate matter (pm2.5) than what the World Health Organization (WHO) considers safe. The air's hazardous amount of pm2.5 can reach deep into the lungs and enter the blood, causing serious long-term health effects. The WHO declares that India has the world's highest death rate from chronic respiratory diseases. India, home to 13 of the world's top 20 polluted cities, is also the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases behind the United States and China.

A general view shows medicines on display at a pharmacy in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on August 8, 2025. President Donald Trump tells CNBC's ''Squawk Box'' on Tuesday that planned tariffs on pharmaceuticals imported into the U.S. could eventually reach up to 250%, the highest rate he has threatened so far. Meanwhile, in an escalation of trade tensions between the United States and India, U.S. President Donald Trump, on August 6, 2025, signs an executive order imposing a 25 percent ad valorem tariff on all Indian imports into the United States. The ad valorem duty imposed in Executive Order 14257 applies in addition to the ad valorem duty imposed in section 2 of the order. This effectively means some categories of Indian exports may face a combined tariff burden of over 50 percent, depending on their classification.

Cargo planes load and unload goods at the cargo terminal at Halimperdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, on July 10, 2025. The Indonesian government prepares anticipatory measures to secure the domestic economy after US President Donald Trump threatens Jakarta with 32 percent tariffs on top of the 10 percent base tariff if a new trade agreement is not reached by August 1. US President Donald Trump renews his trade war by threatening more than a dozen countries with higher tariffs on July 7, but later says he might be flexible with his new August deadline to reach a deal.
