President Joe Biden signs a proclamation establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Mobley-Till National Monument on what would have been Till’s 82nd birthday. Three sites make up the monument: the location where Till’s body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River following his murder in 1955, the courtroom where his murderers were acquitted by an all-white jury, both in Mississippi, as well as the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, where Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley had an open-casket funeral for her son. The sight of Till’s beaten and bloated body was a major galvanizing force for the civil rights movement.
