Iranian mourners beat themselves while Mahmoud Karimi, an Iranian maddah and reciter of eulogies known for his work in religious ceremonies, particularly during Muharram, throws rose petals into the air as a religious symbol during a mass mourning ceremony to mark the holy month of Muharram in northern Tehran, Iran, on July 3, 2025, following the ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is a sacred time marked by mourning Imam Hussein's martyrdom at Karbala. Islam forbids war during this month, emphasizing peace and restraint.
